How to Use This Calculator:

  1. Select Term: Choose Fall/Spring (17 wk), Summer (8 wk), or Winter (3 wk) at the top.
  2. Add Assignments: Click “+ Add” to create teaching assignments for the term.
  3. Enter Course Details: Name the class and enter units (or hours) for Lecture, Activity, and Lab components.
  4. Set Timing: Choose the start week and duration to see how assignments overlap on the timeline.
  5. Toggle CRED/Non-C: Use “CRED” for credit courses (units) or “Non-C” for non-credit courses (direct hours).
  6. Monitor Status: Watch the timeline heatmap and status indicator to stay within the 30-hour weekly limit.

Calculation Reference:

  • Weekly Hours: (Units × Semester Hours) ÷ Course Duration. Must not exceed 30 hrs/week.
  • Semester Hours per Unit: Lecture = 17 hrs, Activity = 34 hrs, Lab = 51 hrs.
  • Load % per Unit: Lecture = 3.33%, Activity = 6.67%, Lab = 7.89%.

Status Key: Safe (<25 hrs) · Caution (25-29 hrs) · Over Limit (30-39 hrs) · STOP (40+ hrs)

Teaching Related Activities (TRA): This calculator automatically includes TRA hours (preparation, grading, office hours) in the weekly hour calculations:

  • Lecture: 1 TRA hour per 1 lecture hour (17 contact + 17 TRA = 34 hrs/unit)
  • Activity: 1 TRA hour per 2 activity hours (34 contact + 17 TRA = 51 hrs/unit)
  • Lab: 0 TRA hours (51 contact + 0 TRA = 51 hrs/unit)
